Three Log Cabin Chalets at Mike Wiegle Heli-Ski

When the team at Frontier Log Home Restoration was invited to work on the three log chalets at Mike Wiegele Heli-Skiing in Blue River, British Columbia, we knew this would be a project that combined craftsmanship, precision, and respect for one of Canada’s most recognized mountain destinations. These chalets are part of an iconic resort that welcomes guests from around the world to experience luxury accommodations surrounded by alpine wilderness. Our task was to bring the natural beauty of these hand-crafted log structures back to life.

Restoration Goals

Over time, even the most well-built log buildings begin to show the effects of weather. UV exposure, snow, and moisture gradually wear away protective finishes, leaving logs faded and vulnerable. The resorts log chalets had reached the stage where refurbishing was needed. We were contracted by Greg Griffin of Mike Wiegele Heli-Skiing to refinish the three log chalets from top to bottom—removing old coatings, preparing the wood, and applying a new, durable finish that would restore both protection and aesthetic appeal.

After restoration:

Our process began with professional log blasting to remove the existing finish. This step is essential to expose clean, sound wood and ensure proper adhesion of new stain systems. The crew used a fine blasting medium that safely stripped the surface without damaging the wood fibers. Once the layers of weathered stain and surface discoloration were gone, the natural grain and texture of the logs were revealed once again. The transformation at this stage alone was dramatic—the chalets already looked years younger.

Staining with Sansin Autumn Gold

With the logs cleaned and prepped it was time to apply stain to the log chalets. We selected Sansin’s Autumn Gold stain, a color that complements the resort’s mountain setting and highlights the warmth of the wood. Sansin products are known for their penetrating formulas that allow the wood to breathe while providing long-lasting protection against UV and moisture. The stain was carefully applied ensuring even coverage and full absorption across every surface, joint, and notch.

The result was a rich, golden tone that brought depth and vibrancy back to the buildings—enhancing their natural cedar hues while maintaining the rustic, high-end charm that defines the Mike Wiegele chalets.

Attention to Detail

Each structure required meticulous work. Our Log Home Restoration team focused on every detail, from corner joints and saddle notches to window frames and railings. In mountain climates like Blue River, consistent protection is critical to avoid water ingress and sun-bleached patches. We also ensured that the finish matched across all three chalets for a cohesive visual presentation within the resort grounds.
