The 7 Steps of Our Log Home Restoration Process

Step 1 – Consultation

Is it time to repair and restore your log house or cabin? This decision can only be made after an inspection of the structure. When possible, we prefer to visit the premises personally, at no charge. In situations where that is not feasible, we ask that you send us high definition photographs of all aspects of the building.

We look at the wood species, age and condition of the logs for signs of weather and UV damage as well as possible mold, mildew or rotting logs that requires repair. Once a thorough review of the structure is completed, we will provide you with our honest, unbiased, professional opinion, as to how to best protect the building as cost effectively as possible. If you decide to proceed, we will provide your log home restoration quote for our services.

Sal personally handles consultations. No call centers — you talk to the owner.

Step 2 – Quotation

This will set out the detailed and full scope of services to be provided through each step of the process, including:

  • Initial inspection of the log building, when possible
  • Advice on options and best course of action
  • Exterior site preparation
  • Interior site preparation
  • All blast medium and equipment
  • Man lift and scaffolding, if required
  • All non-residue tape and polypropylene
  • Blowing and cleaning the logs after blasting
  • Preservative treatment, if required
  • Recommendation on the most suitable stain
  • Applying the stain to the logs
  • Site cleanup
  • Warranty on coating
  • Providing a maintenance sheet on how to prolong the finish
  • Transportation and fuel costs to and from the site
  • Food and accommodation for the crew, if required

There are no hidden costs. Once the quote has been agreed to and we have confirmed a mutually convenient time to start the process, here is what to expect – weather permitting.

All-inclusive. We list every line item — transportation, lift rental, materials, food and lodging if remote — so there are no surprises.

Step 3 -Site Preparation

Exterior:

  • Re-locate all plants, furniture, BBQ’s etc. to a non-dusty environment and cover with polypropylene
  • Remove down spouts, where required
  • Remove all fixtures, lights and other items fastened to walls

Interior:

  • Wrap all interior perimeter walls with polypropylene using staples and tape to seal seams
  • Cover all furniture with polypropylene

We’ve refined our prep checklist over 25 years and hundreds of homes. Interior and exterior surfaces are fully protected before any work starts.

Step 4 – Blast old stain, UV and weather damage off logs

If you have an older log home, you may need to remove the old finish to restore the home to a vibrant new state. In the majority of cases we will recommend media blasting the logs or wood with crushed glass. This medium is as fine as table salt, silica free and 100% environmentally friendly. It creates a fine dust when it hits any substrate surface and becomes airborne. Where required, internal walls can be Osborne brushed to generate a smooth finish.

In most cases we use crushed glass at 50/100 grit — fine as table salt, silica-free, 100% recycled. Naturally dissipates into the soil within a week.

Step 5 – Apply Log Preservative

If required, the logs can be sprayed with a coat of environmentally friendly insecticide and fungicide which comes in a powder form, is mixed with water and applied with a fertilizer sprayer. This will deter termites, carpenter ants, wood boring insects and slows down any potential exterior or interior rot, mold or mildew.

Eco-friendly insecticide and fungicide treatment when needed.

Step 6 – Staining Log Home

If you have an older log home, you may need to remove the old finish to restore the home to a vibrant new state. In the majority of cases we will recommend blasting the logs or wood to prepare for stain. Once the surface is prepped, we can select and apply the right stain for you log home or cabin.

  • A breathable stain with UV inhibitors will need to be applied to both protect and bring out the natural beauty of your home.
  • We will work with you to determine the right product and recommend a number of proven, long lasting eco-friendly stains. All of our stains contain UV inhibitors that will both protect and bring out the natural beauty of your home.
  • We usually do a number of colour samples on your actual logs, so you are confident you have chosen the right product.
  • Once the appropriate stain is agreed upon, all areas that were taped or covered with polypropylene will be double checked to ensure there is no over spraying
  • 2 to 3 coats of stain will be applied, as required.

Sashco Zero Failure Course graduate and Sansin Systems certified. We do color samples on your actual logs so you see the result before we commit.

Step 7 – Interior and Exterior Site Clean Up

  • Remove all the polypropylene, tape and staples from the walls, wipe and vacuum if necessary
  • Re-install all downspouts, fixtures, lights etc.
  • Return furniture, shrubs, etc. to their original position
  • Clean windows where required
  • Sweep and bag any glass dust where possible
  • Blow remaining dust away with a leaf blower
  • Rake and blend any covered soil
  • After a couple of rainy days there will be little sign of any dust

Special care and attention is paid to cleaning the site at the end of the works — interior walls unwrapped, fixtures reinstalled, furniture returned, glass dust swept and bagged.

Don’t just take it from us. Here’s what our customers say.

I met Sal at The Log Home Show in Denver last winter. Over the course of several months, I spoke with ALL the log restoration specialists that work in the area. Sal was an absolute stand out! My wife and I could not be more happy with the results we got.

Frontier did a great job at bringing our weathered raw logs back to perfect condition to stain. They were able to keep the hand hewn look of the logs, which was a specific requirement, and did our custom Pioneer log package justice.

Wow! Our house looks fantastic! Sal and his crew paid close attention to the condition of the logs of our home through the entire process. Sal helped us make wise decisions on colour and worked closely with us through the entire process. He took the time with us to make sure we understood the reasonings behind every step of the restoration process.
